Keep Fit COVID 19

Keep Fit COVID 19

Social distancing policies put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 means most people will have to spend much, if not all, their time at home. Self-isolation means far fewer opportunities to be physically active if you are used to walking or cycling for transportation and doing leisure time sports. Exercise can help keep our immune system strong, less susceptible to infections and better able to recover from them. So we should consider ways to limit the effects of the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as its wider impact of contributing to the long-term chronic disease crisis! Any activity is better than none, and more activity provides more physical and mental health benefits. So what can I do? I hear you asking. Well, we’ve put together some ways to keep yourself up and about during the lockdown. Take regular breaks from sitting in front of your computer, tablet, or phone every 20 to 30 minutes. For example, you could take a few minutes break to walk around the house, get some fresh air in the garden or yard, or play with your dog for a while. Use your stairs! It is an extremely time-efficient way to maintain fitness. As little as three 20-second fast stair climbs a day can improve fitness. There are many great resources for indoor bodyweight exercises for people of all ages too, if you want to see some then check out our Youtube channel or drop us a message! Aim for at least a couple of own bodyweight sessions per week! Both children and dogs will love you replacing some of your online media and sitting time with playing in and around the house with them, so make sure you get the whole family involved. No matter how young or how old your children are, there are many fun activities you can do together indoors and in the garden. Left unattended, the self-isolation imposed by COVID-19 will likely skyrocket sedentary time and will drastically reduce the physical activity levels for many. Our suggestions are only a few examples of ideas that need no special equipment and can be done within limited space! If you need any help at all, you know where we are to give you a helping hand

Why Exercise

Why Exercise

A lot of people put off exercising and we can’t understand why! The summer is coming soon and we want you to get active, to feel more positive and to be healthy so here’s why you should be up and about! It’s a natural mood lifter. Regular physical activity can relieve stress, anxiety, depression and anger. You know that "feel good” sensation you get after doing something physical? We want you feeling more of that! Most people notice they feel better over time as physical activity becomes a regular part of their lives. It keeps you physically fit and able. Without regular activity, your body slowly loses its strength, stamina and ability to function properly. It’s like the old saying: you don’t stop moving from growing old, you grow old from stopping moving. Exercise increases muscle strength, which in turn increases your ability to do other physical activities! It helps keep the doctor away.   Being more active can help you: • lower your blood pressure

• boost your levels of good cholesterol

• improve blood flow

• keep your weight under control

• Boosts your energy level so you can get more done

• Helps you manage stress and tension

• Promotes a positive attitude and outlook

• Helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly

• Improves your self-image and self-confidence

• Helps you spend more time outdoors It can help you live longer.

It’s true, 80 is the new 70 but only if you’re healthy. People who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese. Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with ageing. So, this is easy! Just move more, with more intensity, and sit less. You don’t have to make big life changes to see the benefits. Just start building more activity into your day, one step at a time.
